1413A: DOYLE, ARTHUR CONAN

Description: 1413A. ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE (1859 - 1930) English author and spiritualist remembered for his creation of the immortal Sherlock Holmes and his friend Dr. Watson. Typed Ms., 11pp, 4to., with numerous autograph additions and corrections in dark ink, titled "The Religion of Conan Doyle", and being in the form of an interview, (n.p., n.d.). Spiritualism became Conan Doyle's religion - and driving force - from World War I on. In this remarkable manuscript, he discusses his personal experience with spirits, Henry Ford, Oscar Wilde and Einstein; of course, such Spiritualist concepts as the soul, reincarnation, telepathy, even the (notoriously fraudulent) Cottingley Fairies come up too. In small part: "...I [the interviewer] Do you believe in reincarnation like Henry Ford? Doyle: '...I believe the soul is born and reborn many times. I am not sure that it dons the human form after it has discarded that garment, but my thoughts incline that way... I: Do you consider Ford a great man? Doyle: He is a great personality. I: Why? Doyle: Because he is uncorrupted by his millions. No man can tell if he is incorruptible until such wealth is thrust upon him... I: Did you have any personal contact with the spiritual world? Doyle: When Geley, the French savant and spiritualist, died I was sitting with a medium in England. Suddenly I heard a whispered word, 'Geley.' I asked, in French, 'When you had your accident were the moulds you carried broken?' The answer was 'Oui, Oui, ils etaient casses.' Though the medium did not know a word of French, the spirit communicated through him in that language... This is only one example out of hundreds where I have spoken with those who have changed their vibration, and whom we call 'dead...[The interviewer asks about a posthumous book of Oscar Wilde's psychic utterances, Oscar Wilde from Purgatory by Hester Travers-Smith] Doyle: I knew Oscar Wilde when he was living. In that book I recognize poetic and epigrammatic passages which are as characteristic of Wilde as anything that bears his imprint... Einstein told me modern mathematicians include in their calculations an infinite number of dimensions. Doyle: Einstein merely expressed what every Spiritualist knows..." Covered too are Conan Doyle's thoughts on fairies, marriage, death, the Buddha, Moses, Christ, Mohammed and heaven. A fascinating, heavily marked manuscript with over 125 words in Conan Doyle's hand. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection. Some handling marks, else very good. $1,500 - 2,000

Conan Doyle's Clinical Notebook [Jan. 21st, 2007|04:08 am]

Conan Doyle's Clinical Notebook on Display (May 2004)

In May the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh purchased at Christie's in London Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's clinical notebook for the term 1879/80. It will be on display at the College's Museum until 27 August.

At the front of the notebook there are 30 pages of case histories relating to patients Conan Doyle visited in the wards of the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh as a student. At this time Doyle was assistant to Joseph Bell, the Edinburgh surgeon famed for his powers of observation and deduction, on whom Doyle based his literary detective Sherlock Holmes.

The clinical notes include 'Diseases of Women' taught by Prof Archibald Simpson, James Young Simpson's nephew.

At the back of the notebook is Conan Doyle's manuscript of 'The American's Story', his second ever story sold for publication (£1/10-). The tale centres on Alabama Joe (an indication that Joseph Bell may have inspired another of Conan Doyle's characters?) and the local watering hole Simpson's Bar.

The sparkle on the gem of this aquisition for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh is a poem/piece of doggerel written by Doyle in pencil. It is a medical students perspective of the exams and the examiners at the RCSEd:

Come fill up your cups and your glasses again
Like wise philosophical medical men
I'll sing you a snatch of a song if I can
by the Royal College of Surgeons

Chorus

For there's many a pickle in jar and in pot
The Examining fogies there have got
And they want you to know the devil knows what
at the Royal College of Surgeons

Chorus

From the plantar arch to the circle of Willis
Above + below you'll have to show it
T'will make a vast difference if you don't know it
when at the College of Surgeons

Chorus

What makes up the Ganglion of Meckel I pray
How much Carbon does anyone breathe in a day
Oh thats the style they (l?)ubber away
at the Royal College of Surgeons

Chorus
Some things never change!

KINGSLEY CONAN DOYLE, Son of SIR ARTHUR, Notebook [Jun. 12th, 2006|02:22 pm]

dondanillo
Item 6285990977

Kingsley Conan Doyle, son of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle,
a Notebook presented to him but never used.

The lined notebook measures approx. 7" x 9" and is bound in plum-coloured polished leather with a brass lock and key and has gilt edges. Large gilt initials of the owner are stamped on the front cover. The stamp of Truslove & Hanson, Oxford St. is at the foot of the back end paper.

The inscription on the first page, which is unlined reads :

Kingsley Conan Doyle

               with truest love from his
                                      Dorothy

"T'is not what man does that exalts him
      But what man would do"

       June 4th 1911

Apart from a few minor faults the notebook is in excellent condition.

Kingsley Conan Doyle received a wound to his neck whilst fighting in WW1, but died of Spanish influenza a few weeks after the Armistice, in 1918. Sir Arthur was devastated by his son's death, but being an ardent Spiritualist he contacted him a few hours after he died. Communication was made again by K. with his father in 1919 through a medium called Powell who never looked for payment for seances. Kingsley told his father he was content in the afterlife. Sir Arthur was so moved by the contact he considered it his greatest Spiritual experience.

SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED [Apr. 29th, 2006|07:50 pm]

dondanillo
SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE. ALS: "Arthur Conan Doyle", 2p, 4x6, separate sheets. Grand Hotel, London, 1905 July 28. To actor and theatre manager Sir John Martin Harvey, regarding the production of a play. In part: "My idea would be no authors fees until the cost of production had been covered, and then ten percent on gross receipts. I fear I am ungallant on the question of female interest but it usually seems to me that the 'grip' of a play weakens in exact proportion to the amount of love therein. When I was a young writer people said every novel must have it but I wrote 'Micah Clark' which had no woman in it, and it was very successful." On the verso of the first page, Martin Harvey had penned a draft of his reply, saying that is "very difficult for me to see my plans ahead definitely enough to offer a production." Arthur Conan Doyle's first great success, Micah Clarke, was written in 1887, the same year he penned A Study in Scarlet, which introduced Detective Sherlock Holmes. Lightly foxed. Light show through of writing on first page. Nicked at top mid-vertical fold, pinholes on signature page just nick 1 letter. Overall, fine condition.

Estimate: US $8,000.00 - US $16,000.00

CONAN DOYLE-The Parasite-U.K1st 1894 [Apr. 26th, 2006|10:36 am]

dondanillo
[Tags|, , ]

Westminster: A. Constable and Co., 1894. Original blue boards. I believe this to be a first edition, first issue. Issued as "The Acme Library," Published 1894 as the first book of the ill-fated Acme Library series The series was not a success and in 1897 the publisher reissued The Parasite with new preliminary leaves that removed all mention of the Acme Library. "Novella in which a repulsive medium falls in love with a young man, and uses her powers in an attempt to destroy him when he rejects her." This book has the following faults : the ffep from the front and back of the book are missing. Also, there could be another page missing before the story begins [i really am not sure about this] and i would not know what information it would hold, because the title page, which shows the date and publisher, is present. All the pages of the story are present, securely attached and clean although 1 or 2 are slightly foxed and browing at the edges. The guilt lettering and illustration to the cover are bright, although the cover is showing signs of wear to corners, edges and top and bottom of spine. Overall, apart from the missing pages this is quite a good copy of a scarce edition of this book.
